A Certificate of Authenticity is a document that helps provide assurance that an artwork is genuine. The certificate offers important information about the materials, the size and date created. Do You Need a Certificate of Authenticity?

If you put your work out to the world in shows or galleries, the certificate identifies you and your painting, much like a label. It looks professional and helps keep your artwork organized. If you don't exhibit or sell your paintings, a Certificate of Authenticity is still helpful for your records and can serve as a timeline of your progress and ideas.

What Information Should Be Included On A Certificate Of Authenticity?

On a short form provide:

• Artist name
• Title of work
• Medium (including the substrate the work is created on)
• Dimensions
• Date of creation
• Statement of Authenticity, signed by the artist
• Contact information - email and website
• Your signature

A longer form may include a list of shows and awards, previous owners, publications, artist's statement and inspiration, and an image of the painting.
