Little Chick and the Bald Faced Hornet
In a meadow most bleak, where the thistles grew high,
Lurked and small, yellow chick with a shrewd, watchful eye.
And high in the shadows, in papery halls,
Lived a bald-faced hornet, with venomous thralls.
Each spied on the other with sinister cheer,
Neither quite trusted, yet neither knew fear.
For the chick had a beak that could peck without warning,
And the hornet’s sting was exceedingly scorching.
They met by the nettles at quarter past eight,
Exchanging no pleasantries, sealing their fate.
A pact was concocted with whisper and glance:
“You leave my eggs be, and I’ll give you your chance.”
So the chick stole the beetles from under the clover,
And the hornet took them when the chick had picked over.
No quarrel erupted, no quarrel was planned—
Two villains united by mutual demand.
And so, in the meadow where both shadows creep,
The chick and the hornet their counsel still keep;
For evil, when balanced, may curiously thrive,
And keep the most treacherous friendships alive.
