A baby bird, in a midnight tree,
Awoke to a sight of uncommon glee—
Tiny green lanterns that flickered and flared,
Shimmering secrets, it blinked and stared.

It leapt from its perch in a dazzled swoon,
Pursuing the lights through the silver moon;
Over the brambles and under the briars,
Its tender heart thrilled to unnamable fires.

But fireflies faded, as fireflies will,
Leaving it cradled in moonlight so still;
The night held it close in a silvery gleam-
And the bird drifted off in a firefly dream.
