Goat and Winterberries

In a clearing half-hidden, through hedgerows and haze,

Lurked a goat with a hunger that haunted his days.

He sampled all berries—black, blue, or red—

But winterberries white whispered deep in his head.

Through brambles and thorns, silent he’d sneak,

To pluck pale clusters—the prize he would seek.

The villagers murmured, “Obsessed, some might say—

With ghostly white berries that never decay.”

He nibbled at dusk, in the chill or the heat,

Each silvery orb a forbidden sweet.

And when the last berry was plucked from the tree,

He’d stand there and sigh—quite sorrowfully.
