Cheap Joes Birds and Nests April 12 - 14, 2023
Negative Painting - Acrylic

________________________________
Hello! I am delighted that we will be painting together. I hope you will enjoy our workshop and learn lots of new ideas and techniques.
Below you will find plenty of information - images of the demonstrations, some reference photos, a general supply list, specific colours that I use in each demo, and student handouts.
The Zoom link for the workshop will be posted here, once it is set up.
....keep scrolling down to find everything!
Most important - The main demonstration videos will be posted here after the workshop. You will be able to watch and paint along for 6 extra weeks!
If you wish to make a copy of anything on this page, rather than printing directly from the website (and using a lot of ink!) just take a screen shot of the image or click and drag the images onto your desktop. You may need to resize before printing.
My thanks to Edwina May and Cheap Joes Art Stuff for hosting this event.
Linda

Please watch this tutorial. You will achieve better results if you test your paints before the workshop...even if you only test your favourite colours! Information applies to both acrylic and watercolour paints.

Great results can be achieved on variety of surfaces. You may choose to work on canvas board, stretched canvas or Claybord panel, regardless of the particular surface I use in any project.
In some of the lessons I will work on reclaimed boards. If you have a few paintings that are not-so-great you can reuse them with a couple of quick coats of gesso - no sanding required! I use Holbein gesso, but use what you have. You can prepare these before the workshop. Here's a tutorial:

Course Description
In this interactive online acrylic workshop with Linda Kemp, unravel the secrets of creating simple birds and the delicate framework of their nests with negative painting. Discover how to produce extraordinary underpaintings to create the texture and color of dark feathers. The basic bird shape will emerge as we build layers and blocks of negative shapes. The intricate interwoven tangle of branches and twigs will be fashioned by establishing patterns of light and dark by combining negative and positive painting techniques. Glazing and layering with transparent and opaque acrylics will define the nest shape and model egg forms.
Each day features new projects as Linda leads you step-by-step through the key exercises. Come ready to paint along with Linda. This hybrid online program includes live and video demonstrations created just for this workshop. There will be plenty of time for you to work on your projects and ask questions. A private workshop webpage provides reference photos, a supply list, bonus lessons, and handouts to download. The major demonstration videos will also be available there for you to review and practice for an additional 6 weeks following the workshop. See and paint the world in an exciting and different way. Think positive about negative painting! Designed for the intermediate and up painter.
This online painting class will be taught using the Zoom platform. Students will receive more specific and log-in information by email prior to the live event.
